Trivandrum - The Evergreen City



Thiruvananthapuram :
Thiruvananthapuram is the home city of Lord Vishnu and his five headed snake - Anantha, together spelt as Thiru-anantha-puram. Washed by the waves of Arabian Sea, Thiruvananthapuram or Trivandrum is the capital city of modern day Kerala. The city at present has many influences in form of by being a city that homes many temples of antiquity along with glimpses of British refined culture in the form of architecture.

Attractions :
The city derives its name from the word, Thiru-anantha-puram, meaning the "Abode of Lord Ananta", in Malyalam. Although the city has a history which can be traced almost 300 years back, the chapter of its modern history began in 1729 with its accession to the princely state of Travancore, especially after it was made the capital of Travancore in 1745. It was then that the city developed into a major intellectual and artistic centre. Although appearing to be a laid back and quiet city, it is the hub of considerable cultural activities which peak during the festival season of Onam in August/September. It is also a center of the famed 'Kalaripayattu', said to be the world's first martial art along with the elegant Kathakali dance form. Padmanabhapuram Palace :
Located within the Padmanabhapuram Fort, a redoubtable granite fortress with surrounding walls around four kilometers long is the Padmanabhapuram Palace. The setting is very scenic located at the foot of the Western Ghats with the river Valli flowing nearby. The palace was constructed around 1601 AD & the palace complex is one of the best examples of traditional Kerala architecture.

Ponmudi :
Also known as the Golden peak, Ponmudi is connected to Trivandrum by a picturesque road offering beautiful views while the climate here is salubrious all the year. The peaks & surrounding tracts are very popular for trekking and hiking. Adding to the vistas are tea gardens along with a number of rivulets and rapids which become large in number during the rains. The surrounding forest tracts are verdant with tropical vegetation & also host a variety of wildlife. Also present in the region is Agasthyarkoodam, one of the highest peaks in the Western Ghats as is the scenic Meenmutty Falls.

Padmanabhaswamy temple :
The temple devoted to Lord Vishnu is located inside the Fort near Padmanabhaswamy Palace & is one amongst 108 holiest abodes of Lord Vishnu. The depiction of the deity is in the form of Vishnu in Anananthasayanam posture i.e. eternal sleep of yognidra. The ancient temple as well as the city of Thiruvananthapuram, thus derives their name from the name of the presiding deity.
